Protecting Your Hair During GLP-1 Hair Loss

Today, we’re talking about something I’ve been seeing and hearing about more and more: hair thinning while taking GLP-1 medications.

With so many women incorporating GLP-1 medications into their weight-loss journey, I think it’s just as important to talk about protecting your hair along the way.

Hair shedding can happen during periods of significant or rapid weight loss, and factors such as changes in nutrition may also play a role. This doesn’t mean you have to choose between your weight-loss journey and healthy hair. It simply means this may be a time to pay a little more attention to your nutrition, hair-care routine, and the amount of tension you’re putting on your hair.

GLP-1 Hair Loss: Give Your Hair a Little Extra Care

If you’re noticing GLP-1 hair loss, start by looking at your hair routine as a whole. This is not the time to add unnecessary pulling, tight braiding, heavy extensions, or constant manipulation to hair that may already be experiencing increased shedding.

Your goal should be to create the healthiest foundation possible while minimizing unnecessary stress on your natural hair.

Nutrition Matters, Too

When you’re eating less, it can become easier to fall short on nutrients your body needs. Protein, iron, zinc, vitamin D, B vitamins and other nutrients all play roles in normal hair growth and overall health.

Before adding new vitamins or supplements—especially if you take prescription medication—talk with your doctor about what you actually need. Your provider may recommend bloodwork if you’re experiencing significant shedding or suspect a deficiency.

And remember: supplements should support good nutrition, not replace it.

Be Mindful With Protective Styles

A protective style should actually protect your hair.

If your hair is already thinning or shedding, be especially careful with styles that require your natural hair to be braided tightly underneath and then have extensions or a wig sewn onto those braids. The additional tension can put more stress on vulnerable hair.

That doesn’t mean you have to give up your favorite styles. It may simply be time to choose options that require less tension and give your natural hair a break.

Consider a Closure Wig During Your Hair-Recovery Season

As the weather begins to cool down, this can be a great time to consider a closure wig.

A properly fitted closure wig can give you the versatility and finished look you want while allowing you to minimize daily manipulation of your natural hair underneath. Your natural hair still needs regular cleansing, conditioning and care—you simply have more freedom to leave it alone between maintenance days.

At Belle Bree Hair, we believe beautiful extensions should complement healthy hair practices, not come at the expense of your natural hair.

Keep Your Hair-Care Routine Gentle

While experiencing increased shedding, simplify your routine. Detangle gently, keep your hair moisturized, avoid excessive heat and pay attention to how much hair you’re losing.

Choose products based on the needs of your scalp and hair rather than products that promise to magically stop shedding. Hair loss can have many causes, so persistent, sudden, patchy or severe hair loss deserves a conversation with a healthcare professional or dermatologist.

Your Hair Journey Deserves Attention, Too

Your wellness journey and your hair journey don’t have to work against each other.

If you’re taking a GLP-1 medication, continue following the guidance of the healthcare professional managing your treatment. At the same time, give your hair the nutrition, gentle care and low-tension styling it deserves.

Sometimes protecting your hair isn’t about doing more. It’s about knowing when to give it a break.

Well, Hello Beautiful. Your healthy-hair foundation always comes first.
