Why Summer Is the Hardest Season on Extensions ☀️

Summer is filled with vacations, pool days, beach trips, outdoor events, and plenty of opportunities to make memories. But if you've ever noticed your extensions behaving differently during the warmer months, you're not imagining it.
As much as we enjoy everything summer brings, it can also be one of the most challenging seasons for hair extensions.
Between the heat, humidity, chlorine, salt water, sweat, and increased sun exposure, your extensions are exposed to conditions that can affect how they look, feel, and perform.
One of the most common concerns I hear from clients during the summer is:
"My hair is tangling more than usual."
"My hair feels dry."
"My straight hair won't stay sleek."
"My extensions seem harder to manage."
The reality is that extensions often require more moisture during the summer than they do at almost any other time of the year.
Just like natural hair, extensions can become dehydrated when exposed to the elements. Sun, chlorine, and salt water can strip moisture from the hair, causing it to feel rougher, become more prone to tangling, and require additional maintenance to keep it looking its best.
How to Protect Your Extensions This Summer
The good news is that a few simple habits can make a huge difference in the longevity and appearance of your hair.
Deep Condition Regularly
Adding a deep conditioning treatment to your routine helps replenish moisture that may be lost from heat, sun, and outdoor activities.
Use a Leave-In Conditioner
A quality leave-in conditioner helps maintain hydration throughout the day while adding softness and manageability.
Prep Your Hair Before Swimming
Before entering a pool, lake, or the ocean, thoroughly wet your hair with clean water and apply a leave-in conditioner. This simple step helps reduce how much chlorine or salt water the hair absorbs.
Rinse Immediately After Swimming
Whenever possible, rinse your hair with fresh water immediately after swimming to remove chlorine, salt, and other residues before they have a chance to dry into the hair.
Detangle Consistently
This is especially important for curly and textured extensions. Gentle, regular detangling helps prevent knots from becoming larger tangles over time.
Store Hair Properly
When wigs or extensions are not being worn, store them properly to help maintain their shape, softness, and overall condition.
Quality Hair Is Built for Longevity
One of the reasons I always encourage clients to invest in quality hair is because good extensions are designed to be worn, maintained, and reinstalled multiple times.
Beautiful hair isn't just about how it looks on the day you receive it. It's about how well it performs throughout your everyday life—including vacations, summer activities, and everything in between.
With proper care, quality extensions can absolutely thrive during the summer months.
Because great hair should keep up with every plan, every trip, and every moment.
Planning a Vacation?
Don't skip your pre-trip deep conditioning treatment. Taking a little extra time to prepare your extensions before your trip can help keep them soft, manageable, and beautiful long after your vacation ends.
Until next time,
Belle Bree Hair
