Why I'm Starting My Healthy Hair Journey Over

For years, I've encouraged women to protect their natural hair while enjoying the versatility of extensions.
Today, I'm taking my own advice.
Recently, I noticed something I never expected to see on my own head—extensive heat damage.
After every protective style, I had gotten into the habit of visiting a Dominican salon because it was fast, convenient, and fit into my busy schedule. A quick wash, blow-dry, and I was out the door.
At first, I didn't think much of it.
Over time, however, repeated exposure to high heat took a toll on my natural hair.
My curls slowly stopped returning.
My strands became weaker.
My ends became thinner.
Eventually, I had to face the reality that my hair had suffered significant heat damage.
Choosing Healthy Hair Over Length
Making the decision to cut off most of my hair hasn't been easy.
Like many women, I've worked hard to grow my hair, and the thought of losing so much of it is emotional.
But healthy hair will always be more important than long, damaged hair.
This isn't the end of my journey.
It's the beginning of a healthier one.
What I'll Be Doing Differently
As I start over, my focus is on rebuilding the health of my natural hair.
That means:
Limiting unnecessary heat
Prioritizing moisture and deep conditioning
Keeping up with regular trims
Protecting my hair instead of constantly styling it
Listening to what my hair needs instead of choosing what's most convenient
I'll also be wearing glueless closure wigs more often.
I've found that they give me the flexibility to enjoy beautiful styles while minimizing manipulation of my natural hair. Because they aren't glued down, I can easily remove them, moisturize my hair, and care for my scalp throughout the week.
What I Hope You Take Away
Protective styles are amazing, but they're only truly protective when your natural hair is healthy.
Don't let convenience lead you to habits that could damage the very hair you're trying to protect.
Pay attention to the signs.
If your curls aren't bouncing back...
If your hair feels different...
If your ends are becoming thinner...
Take action early.
Hair grows back, but healthy habits make all the difference.
I'll be documenting my entire healthy hair journey—from the big chop to regrowth—and I hope you'll follow along with me.
Because if sharing my experience helps someone else avoid the same mistake, then this new chapter has already served a purpose.
